A host of stars, including former model and French president's wife Carla Bruni, will perform at a 91st birthday party tribute to Nelson Mandela.

Bruni will give her first public performance since becoming the First Lady of France, singing at a three-hour Mandela Day concert in New York.

She will perform two duets with Dave Stewart, formerly of the Eurythmics, at a star-studded concert at Radio City Music Hall.

The concert also features top African talent like the Soweto Gospel Choir and Senegalese singer Baaba Maal.

Bruni and Stewart plan to sing her composition Quelqu'un m'a dit (Someone told me) and Bob Dylan's Blowin' in the Wind.

The concert is the centrepiece of a global celebration of the achievements of South Africa's first black president.

Other artists due to feature include Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, Queen Latifah, will.i.am (of The Black Eyed Peas), Wyclef Jean and Cyndi Lauper.

The comedian Whoopi Goldberg will be master of ceremonies.

Film stars Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon, Forest Whitaker and Susan Sarandon are expected to attend.
